Visitor Industry:  

Guam has developed into a major tourist destination, an industry that provides the bulk of the island’s non-government income. Approximately 1.2 million tourists arrive in Guam each year generating approximately $1.35 billion revenues with visitors from Japan continuing to provide 80% of the tourist market. Although the number of Guam’s visitors fell slightly after several disastrous world events, visitor arrivals have been steadily increasing.

  In 1995 Guam hit its 1 million visitor arrival mark and has consistently achieves this record for the past 10 years
  In 1996 Japan visitors alone reach 1 million
   
    - Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, U.S. are main markets for Guam.
   
    - Guam-only visa waiver program for core markets contributes to the consistent high visitor arrivals from these countries
  $272 million spent to upgrade Guam International Airport Terminal
  $52.9 million Tumon Redevelopment Project - Infrastructure changes to roadways, beautification in our primary tourist economic zone

 

Tourism 2007-2011 Goals

  Increase total annual visitor arrivals to 1,530,000
  Increase Japan & Korean visitors to 1,101,600 and 290,700 respectively
  Increase length of stay from 3 nights to 4+ nights by 13% for Japanese visitors and nights to 5+ nights by 6% for Korean visitors
  Increase the hotel inventory
  Increase airline seat capacity
  Set quality standards
  Protect our natural surroundings
  Build up the visitor experience
  Exceed visitor expectations
  Replenish the marketing war chest
